Cap’n Graeme – Read my posts

My sea story started early.  When I was five I was home-schooled on a commercial salmon troller, fishing between Oregon and Alaska.  I still fish a lot, but lately I have been racing small boats to Alaska more than fishing there–see R2AK. I also raced our previous boat, Kotuku, a lot: Pacific Cup, VanIsle 360, Oregon Offshore, Swiftsure. When not doing boatwork, I was busy as the father of two girls and the president of Industrial Revolution, a local NW company that makes innovative outdoor gear. In my spare time–ha–I enjoy climbing, cooking, and tormenting my daughters with bad jokes.

Version 2I grew up in the Pacific Northwest with avid boaters as parents–though they often referred to boating as “lessons in humility.” My first offshore experience came when Graeme and I sailed across the Pacific on our honeymoon. (Still alive, still married.) I wrote a book about it: The Motion of the Ocean: 1 Small Boat, 2 Average Lovers, & a Woman’s Search for the Meaning of Wife (Simon & Schuster). Since then I’ve been raising girls and writing about parenting (more lessons in humility), gender roles, and our family’s struggle to find equity, equilibrium, and inspiration. I was an English teacher before becoming a writer, so I’m particularly excited about boatschooling kids in the Arctic, a place I’m eager to learn about myself.

Like my dad, I have been driving and navigating boats since about age 5. Today I’m 14, going to be a freshman in highschool. I love horseback riding, travel, skiing, backpacking, snorkeling, reading, doodling, and dancing around with my friends. I am excited to see more glaciers, old cruising friends, and new places I’ve never seen!

I’m in 11 and I love gymnastics, climbing the mast, and spending time with family. My passions are aerial silks, sailing, reading what ever books I can get my hands on, and pretty much anything else you can swing, climb, or hang upsidown on. You can usually find me hanging out upside down on whatever I can find.  [Savai is too modest to say this but, at her school, she was a junior librarian, a Kindness Challenge class rep, and a Circle of Friends leader. She is also a very hard worker and a great cook, plus she has never been sea sick. At least not yet . . . .]

Photographer and Jack-of-all-trades John – Halcyon Wandering

John Guillote is a photographer by profession, explorer by nature and entrepreneur by accident. He is a sailor with over 7,000 miles under his belt, and can often be found delivering a boat somewhere on the pacific seaboard or tweaking the sails on his own sailboat, Halcyon, which he and his wife, Becca, use for their own adventures.

As a photographer, John enjoys discovering new angles, perspectives and methods for capturing a scene or subject. He believes that everything on our planet, no matter how small and mundane, has an interesting story to tell, and he enjoys finding and telling that story to others. You can find his photographs in a variety of Outdoor Brand/Lifestyle company websites and publications, including Cruising World, PassageMaker, National Geographic, REEF, and 48° North.
