Our first 48 hours cruising in Newfoundland

Savai & Juliette at the Ferryland Lighthouse

Hi! Savai here. Our family is cruising Dogbark for the next two weeks along with my friend Juliette. We have been having a BLAST in our first few days. After flying into St. John’s and touring the local universities, we sailed to Ferryland Harbor. We came with a bucket list of animals to see, but somehow have already checked all of them off the list.
Wildlife we have seen so far:

  • Puffins: At the largest puffin colony in North America
  • Humpback whales: Several sightings totaling over 20 breaches
  • Foxes: Seen on an evening walk out to Ferryland Lighthouse
  • Sunfish: Spotted between fishing stops
  • Albatross: To Graeme’s delight, he claims he saw a species that has never been spotted in the North Atlantic
  • Atlantic white sided dolphins: seen playing in rollers right off the beach
  • “Stretch Limo Dolphins”: Possibly fin whales? Still unsure.

Welcome to Burin, we can see you arriving at the port from James Cook lookout.

  2. Great post Savai! Hopefully these foxes didn’t steal any of your belongings…;)

  3. Thank you all for the posts from your adventure. I looks and sounds like you’re all having a great time. I’ve never been to Newfoundland and it is wonderful to see all your images of it. We’re having a spell of warm weather now and today may get to 87 F. We recently stopped in to see Vicky on our way back from a short visit to the Olympic Peninsula. We had a fine visit and had a late lunch out at El Huarache, their favorite Mexican Place,. Vicky was in good spirits and looking forward to her trip to Edmonton.

Mo and I sort of casually followed a recent marine event called “70 48” which was human powered (no sailing allowed) race from Tacoma to Port Townsend which ran just after the WA 360 a human and wind powered race around Puget Sound from Olympia, as far North as Pt. Roberts, all starting in Port Townsend..

This is nothing like what you are experiencing in NFL.

Hope your visit continues to go well. All the best, especially on your return to Puget Sound.

    Happy Sailing, Eric and Mo
