Fog, More Fog, and Foggier

You know that moment in The Truman Show when Jim Carey sails off towards the big blue wall to find answers? It felt similar on Dogbark as we sailed into the known. The sky was so big and blue as we left the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and almost immediately we entered a sea of neverending fog.

There were more settlements on the coast of Labrador than we thought, we even found a boat yard!
Every day looks like this.

It feels like we are in a permenant snowglobe of fog. At best we can see a mile or so away, but generally we only have about 1/2 a mile of visability. The days are getting longer with the light, but the twilight still makes it difficult to see.

The seas have been surprisingly calm and we’ve been mostly sailing without the engine between 6-9 knots. Quite pleasant for the North Atlantic. Aside from the sea birds and a special humpback sighting on Al and Ted’s watch, it’s been pretty uneventful. I’ve been trying to recover from my side effects of Sturgeron, which has never given me issues before, but I finally have it out of my system so I’m awake enough to write this post.

Did you know that fulmars are basically dragons? Their self defense mechanism is to projectile vomit on their enemy, and the acid in their vomit melts away the waterproofing in feathers, which causes birds to drown. How crazy is that?

The first couple days was rather exciting, after my last post we immediately took off for some fishing near the island across from Blanc Sablon. Brian caught 7 mackeral! The rest of us caught 3. After Graeme filleted the fish we enjoyed some mackeral rice bowls, and the next day we had mackerel and fried rice wraps. Between the resh mackerel and croissants, we’re been gourmet feasting on Dogbark!

We still have another 350nm to go, and the forecast is calling for lighter winds. But hopefully we will be to Greenland in a couple of days!

Hopefully with the scopolamine patch, I’ll be a bit more awake and can work on my quiviut beanie project, which I am very excited to share with you all. If you followed us in 2024, you will recall Al foraging some musk ox fur, which I brought home to process into yarn, and look forward to sharing that process full circle.

Until next time!
