Happy New Year! For those of you who don’t already know, I will unveil the details of our often-debated, subject-to-small-changes route for 2019. Before we leave Hawai’i, we get to make a few stops. We will go to our friends’ ranch in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island, then head to Kauai and leave from there.
- From Kauai, we will sail 1,950 miles southwest to Majuro, an atoll in the Marshall Islands.
- From Majuro, we will sail 300 miles west to Pohnpei, a beautiful mountainous island in Micronesia with famous ruins. Note: NOT the same as Pompeii, the famous place in Italy with the volcanic eruption and plaster people.
- From Pohnpei, we will sail 900 miles west to Guam, conveniently located on the rhumbline to our next destination, Taiwan.
- From Guam, we will sail 1,500 miles to Taiwan, where we will eat delicious Taiwanese food every day until we leave, to another foodie location.
- From Taiwan, we will sail 800 miles north to Osaka, Japan, which needs no introduction except for, “SUUUUUSHIIIII! WAAAHOOOOOO!”
- From Osaka, we will cruise up the coast of Japan 1,000 miles till we reach Sapporo, where we will visit some friends and eat more sushi and ramen and udon until we are tired of Japanese food, which I’m not sure is possible.
- From Sapporo we will sail 1,300 miles northeast to Adak, Alaska, a tiny cannery town in the Aleutians.
- From Adak, we will cruise the Aleutians until we reach Dutch Harbor, where we know the Harbor Masters pretty well as we have been there twice already.
- From Dutch Harbor, we will cruise through Kodiak and Southeast Alaska with our friends on Debonair. From there, we will go home to Bainbridge Island and be back in time for school to start up again this September.
All in all we will travel about 10,000 more miles from Hawai’i back to Bainbridge. At least that’s the current plan. Dad still talks about the Northwest Passage, but for now the plan is Bainbridge.
Sounds like a fantastic trip…can’t wait to see you this summer…
Hugs Renee’ & Larry

Best of luck on the next leg of your adventure!

Wow, I thought going all the way to the golf course to XC ski today was a pretty ambitious big deal.
Hi Janna! I have family that lives on Kaneohe Bay who sail similarly as you all do. They are near the Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club, and also have dock for tie up. IF you are still in Hawaii and would love to meet more sailors, the last name is Nottage (like mine). The family just returned from extended South Pacific (5 months) sail.
Best, Sally Nottage
Very cool. Around the world!
Tom and I were just talking about you and wondering what your plans were post-Hawaii. Thanks for the update, and good luck on the loop! We will be looking forward to hearing how it goes.
Wow, Talia, that plan is so awesome! I hope that you will be able to come home even sooner, because i really want to talk to you about all the things you would see there, and all the places you are going!
I am wondering if you could tell me a few of the animals you will see on your trip?
Please let us know about the animals on Micronesia because my Mom has never been there
Is Micronesia big enough to hold Seattle on it? Alexa told me it has 104,000 people!
Now that I know that bow we scrubbed will be all those places, I’m glad I helped scrub it!!!!!!!!!
