Position as of 1000 Pacific Time
50.16N, 129.19W
Heading is 305, boatspeed 8-12 knots
Wind is 14-20 from 105 magnetic and has been steady except for brief squally bits.
Sea is settling a bit with wind waves from S, and SSW combined in the 3-5’ range, with NW swells opposing them at odd times.
Sailed most of the night under main alone, but have a bit of jib pulled out now on starboard gibe.
Weather has been heavy low clouds w occasional light rain, accompanied by wind of up to 25 knots. Easy, comfortable sailing with only a little odd motion from the leftover NW swell.
We have had Dall’s Porpoise, brown Albatross and some lost puffins this morning. Lots of whales yesterday including a couple I had to yell at for playing in traffic. We had one guy just lying on his side flapping his fin at us in the traffic separation zone. Kids these days.
Plan is to ride the Southerly as long as we can, gybing as necessary, probably 10 miles off shore and well clear of Queen Charlotte Sound shelf. Just saw 15.3 knots SOG so maybe we can stay in it long enough to cover some miles? Time will tell, but all is well and we are safe, comfortable and glad to be alive and sailing downwind on this old girl.
Hope you guys have a great day too, happy almost 4th!
Sounds like a beautiful sail you’re having! Happy 4th you all!
OOOh, Graeme—we needed this “projection” into another world, during the pandemic! I could smell the waves! Thanks. Safe journey!.—Love, Auntie Crys
Graeme, love your writing of so many details of the navigation of Dog Bark. It gives me things to google. Such priceless humor with the whales too!
I’m so happy for you and yours! What an exciting place to be. Be safe, stay healthy and enjoy ❗️❤️Love, Reen
